FABRIC SELECTION:

For this quilt, you need a variety of lights (I used white fabrics with blue or brown designs on them, all reading very light), medium blues, and medium and dark browns – all in 2½” widths. The only exceptions are the medium blue side triangles on the edges of the quilt.

¼ yard of 7 different very light blues (6 for backgrounds, sashing, and one star; 1 for outside Four Patches)

1/8 yard of 9 different medium blues (for stars, backgrounds, and sashing)

½ yard or fat quarters of 4 different medium blues (for side and corner triangles)

¼ yard of 4 different very light browns (for backgrounds, sashing)

1/8 yard of 10 different medium browns (8 for sashing; 2 for Four Patches)

¼ yard of 1 dark brown (outside Four Patches)

BACKING: 1¼ yard

BATTING: 45" x 45”

BINDING: ½ yard

SUPPLIES:

Sewing machine in good working order.

Sewing supplies you regularly use such as thread, straight pins, scissors, seam ripper, etc.

Rotary cutting equipment: mat (18" x 24"), ruler (6" x 24"), and cutter with a sharp blade. 6" square ruler.  This is important.

 

CUTTING

For the Stars:

From 8 of the medium blues and 2 of the very light blues, cut 1 strip, 2½" x 42". Cut each strip into 6 squares, 2½” x 2½”. You will have a total of 48 medium blue squares and 12 very light blue squares.

For the Backgrounds:

From 4 different very light blues or very light browns and 1 medium blue, cut 1 strip 2½" x 42".

Cut each strip into 4 rectangles, 2½” x 4½”, and 4 squares, 2½” x 2½”.

Sashing:

For the sashing, you will use assorted very light blues, very light browns, and medium browns.

From your very light blues and very light browns, cut an assortment of 16 rectangles, 2½” x 8½”.

From the medium browns, cut an assortment of 16 rectangles, 2½” x 8½”.

Posts:

The posts are Four Patches in 2 different medium browns (around center star) and Four Patches in a very light blue and dark brown (8 of the remaining Four Patches)

For the medium brown Four Patches:

From 2 different medium browns, cut 1 strip, 2½" x 42".

For the very light blue and dark brown Four Patches:

From 1 very light blue and 1 dark brown, cut 2 strips each, 2½” x 42”.

Side triangles: From 2 different medium blue fabrics, cut 1 square from each fabric, 12” x 12”. Cut these squares in ¼'s on both diagonals.

Corner triangles: From 2 different medium blue fabrics, cut 1 square from each fabric, 14” x 14”. Cut these squares in half only on one diagonal.
